Your Name Is the Product
- Say in three words what you want your name to stand for.
- Check whether a post or a deal fits those three words.
A brand is what people expect when they see your name. You already have one. The only question is whether you chose it.
Start with three words. What should a stranger say about you after one minute on your page? Hard worker. Funny. Gives back. Pick three that are true, because a brand you have to fake is one you cannot keep up.
| Their three words | A post that fits | A post that does not |
|---|---|---|
| Leader, early riser, team-first | A 6 a.m. workout with teammates | A solo ad for an energy drink they never drink |
| Funny, local, loyal | A skit filmed at a hometown diner | A serious ad for a bank in another state |
| Student, mentor, gives back | Tutoring kids at a summer camp | A post mocking a rival player |
Your three words are focused, funny, and local. A company offers Ⓛ500.00 to post about a product you have never used. What fits your brand?
Pick your answer first, then open it.
Try it first. If you would not use it, say no.
✓ Right. A post that does not fit costs trust, and trust is what the next brand is paying for.
Post it. Every deal grows the brand.
A deal that does not fit shrinks the brand. People notice when a post is not really you.
Post it, and joke that you never tried it.
Funny, maybe. But the company paid for a real post, and your followers get a fake one. Both lose.
Steady beats loud. Posting less, and always like you, builds more value than posting every day about anything.
This week
Write your three words. Look at your last ten posts and mark each one that fits them. That count is where your brand stands today.
