Life After the Last Game
- Plan for the day NIL income ends while it is still coming in.
- Answer three questions about the month after your last game.
- Name the kinds of protection to ask about before the team plan ends.
Eligibility ends on a date. NIL income can end the same day. Planning for that day while the money is coming in is the whole point of this program.
Three questions for the day after. What will I earn next, and when does it start? What do I own that keeps paying after I stop playing? What would a bad month cost, and is it covered?
| At the last game | Athlete one | Athlete two |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency reserve at the end | Ⓛ0.00 | Ⓛ7,500.00 |
| Long-term account | Ⓛ0.00 | Ⓛ4,200.00 |
| Tax owed with no reserve | Ⓛ2,600.00 | Ⓛ0.00 |
| First month after eligibility | Borrowing | Covered |
Same deals, same total. The difference is the habits.
Protection is part of the plan. Health cover for the gap between the team plan and the next job. Renter’s or car cover for what you own. Disability cover if your body is your income. These are questions to ask, not products to buy here.
It is your final season. A deal pays Ⓛ6,000.00. What does the plan do that it did not do in your first year?
Pick your answer first, then open it.
Grows the reserve for the gap after eligibility, since this payment may be the last.
✓ Right. In the first year the next payment was coming. In the last year it may not be. The reserve line gets bigger, on purpose.
Spends it. The season is ending anyway.
The season is ending. Rent is not. The last payments are the ones that have to reach furthest.
Nothing changes.
The plan is the same shape. The shares change, because the year after this one looks different.
This week
Write the date your eligibility ends. Under it, write what you will earn the month after, what you will own, and what a bad month costs. If any line is blank, that line is your work this semester.
