What an Offer Really Pays

An offer is not its price. It is its price divided by the time it takes. A big number with a lot of hours can pay less than a small one.

An appearance pays Ⓛ600.00. With travel, prep, and the event, it takes 4 hours. What does it pay per hour?

Work it out, then check

Ⓛ600.00 divided by 4 hours is Ⓛ150.00 an hour. Leave out the travel and it looks bigger than it is.

Offer B pays less and is worth more per hour. Hours you do not spend on one deal are hours for training, school, or the next deal.

A company offers "great exposure" and no pay for three posts. What is true?

Pick your answer first, then open it.

Exposure does not pay rent or taxes. If the work is worth doing, it is worth a price, in writing.

✓ Right. Three posts are three pieces of work. You can still say yes for a reason you choose, but know it is unpaid work.

Exposure always leads to paid deals later.

Nobody can promise that. Judge the offer by what it pays now, not by what it hints at.

Free posts do not count as work.

The hours are the same whether you are paid or not. Count them.

Offer A pays Ⓛ1,000.00 in product. Offer B pays Ⓛ700.00 in cash. Rent is due this month. Which helps more?

Pick your answer first, then open it.

Offer B. Cash pays bills, and tax may still be owed on the product.

✓ Right. Product can be worth having, but it does not pay rent, and it can still add to what you owe in tax.

Offer A. It is worth more.

Worth more on paper. This month, you need money that pays bills.

This session does not tell you what to charge or how to negotiate. It gives you the math to judge an offer, and the questions to take to someone you trust.

This week

Take your last offer, or your next one. Count every hour it takes, travel included. Divide the pay by the hours. Write that number next to the offer.
